SUNCT SUNA headache

SUNCT / SUNA

Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing (SUNCT) and Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform headache attacks with Autonomic symptoms (SUNA) are rare and severe forms of headache disorders. They are characterized by intense, short-lasting pain on one side of the face or head, usually centered around the eye or temple.

SUNCT is distinguished by symptoms such as redness of the eye (conjunctival injection) and tearing, while SUNA can involve other autonomic symptoms like nasal congestion or eyelid drooping without the eye redness and tearing. Those with SUNCT or SUNA typically experience extremely brief but very intense attacks of stabbing or burning pain, which can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. These attacks can occur many times a day, significantly disrupting daily life.

Dr. Cohen has extensive experience diagnosing and treating patients with SUNCT/SUNA. Treatment options are tailored to each individual and may include medication management, lifestyle modifications, supplements, and specialized procedures.
