Tension headache

Tension headaches

are the most common type of headache and are often characterized by a mild to moderate, steady ache or pressure around the head, usually described as a tight band-like sensation. Unlike migraine, are not accompanied by the aura symptoms, nausea, and sound/light sensitivity. These headaches can be triggered by stress, poor posture, eye strain, or muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, and they may last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

Although described as not as painful as migraine, tension headaches can still prove to be debilitating (especially when chronic). Tension headaches can be caused by a variety of factors, most commonly related to physical or emotional stress. Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and scalp often plays a key role, which can result from poor posture, prolonged sitting, or repetitive movements that strain the muscles. Emotional stress, anxiety, and fatigue are also significant triggers, as they cause the body to tighten muscles unconsciously, leading to discomfort and headaches. Additionally, factors such as dehydration, eye strain from excessive screen time, and poor sleep habits can contribute to the onset of tension headaches.

In addition to being experienced in providing pharmacological treatment for tension headaches, Dr. Cohen takes a comprehensive approach by evaluating various aspects of both headache triggers and lifestyle factors. Stress, anxiety, mood, sleep, and diet can all significantly contribute to tension headaches, and addressing these areas is key to effective management.

Dr. Cohen is also skilled in procedures for tension headache, including:

  • Botox injections

  • Nerve blocks

  • Trigger point injections

  • Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibody injections

  • Neuromodulation
