What is a headache doctor / specialist?

I often get asked, "What is a headache doctor / specialist, and how are they different from other doctors, like neurologists?" Headaches are one of the most common symptoms people bring to their doctors, and with so many types of headaches and causes, it's no surprise that a variety of healthcare providers claim to treat them. However, what truly sets a headache doctor / specialist apart is their dedicated and specialized training specifically focused on diagnosing and treating headache disorders.

Allow me to reintroduce myself: I first became board-certified in internal medicine and worked as a primary care provider (PCP), where I treated many patients with headaches and migraine. Recognizing the complexity of these conditions, I chose to pursue further specialization in headache medicine by completing a fellowship in the field. During my fellowship, I trained under experts and gained hands-on experience in treating a wide range of headache disorders—not just common headaches. I also learned advanced treatment options that aren't typically offered in general neurology clinics, such as injections (such as botox injections, nerve blocks, and trigger point injections), physical therapy techniques, and even ketamine infusions.

After completing my fellowship, I passed the board certification exam in headache medicine. In summary, a headache specialist is a doctor who has gone beyond standard medical training to become an expert in treating all kinds of headache disorders. If you’re suffering from migraine or other debilitating headaches, it might be time to consider seeing a headache specialist for more focused and comprehensive care.
